PRALKA poleca... Big Business "Mind The Drift"

Najbardziej eklektyczny w historii album Big Business, choć dopiero trzeci (kto wie, co jeszcze nas czeka?).
Pomimo zasilenia szeregów kultowych Melvinsów, członkowie Big Business są nadal w posiadaniu niekończących się pokładów energii i przede wszystkim, świeżych pomysłów.
Standardowe duo - bas i perkusja, tym razem uzupełnione przez gitarę nowego, japońskiego członka - Toshi Kasai.
Na „Mind The Drift” znajdziemy masę zapożyczeń i klimatu charakterystycznego dla... power metalu, heavy rocka, rock opery, momentami nawet prostego pseudo-progresywnego grania, acz, co ważne, z duża dawką specyficznego poczucia humoru. W tekstach i w muzyce.
Nie jest to płyta dla wszystkich, a zwłaszcza nie dla każdego, kto poszukuje stonerowo/sludgeowych brzmień. Nie każdy zaakceptuje fakt, iż zespół puszcza do nas oko mówiąc - nigdy przecież nie byliśmy kapela, która do swojej twórczości podchodzi w 100% poważnie. Tym razem tej autoironii / dystansu do siebie i swojej muzyki, jest więcej niż zwykle.
Ci, którzy pokochali dwie pierwsze płyty Big Business, początkowo mogą mieć spory problem z odbiorem tej płyty. Nietrudno zauważyć mniejszy ciężar brzmieniowy, ukryty głęboko pod psychodelicznymi melodiami granymi prze Toshi, bas nie jest już tak szalony, a wokal... stał się tym razem mocniejszy, czystszy, OK, nie bójmy się tego słowa, wręcz heavy-metalowy!
Wystarczy jednak dać tej płycie chwilę czasu, by poczuć jej klimat i zacząć śpiewać razem z Jaredem Warrenem absurdalnie abstrakcyjne teksty.

Można też zachwycać się nad niesamowicie oryginalną grą znakomitego perkusisty Coadyego Willisa.

Ale najlepiej
podziwiać
Big Business,

w stadionowo-stoner-rockowej balladzie a'la Yes w zamykającym płytę "Theme From Big Business II".

Zaczyna się mocnym punk/metalowym kopniakiem, co w przypadku formacji Kylesa nie zaskakuje. Tym razem jednak jest o wiele ciekawiej. Siłą czwartej płyty zespołu z Georgii jest jej różnorodność.
O tej różnorodności nie stanowi tylko dodatkowy, czysty, kobiecy wokal - to gitarzystka Laura Pleasants, czy też... dwa zestawy perkusyjne, które nadają muzyce większej przestrzeni i, co tu dużo mówić, zwłaszcza z słuchawkami na uszach, brzmią oszałamiająco.
W przypadku tej płyty ciężko znaleźć jedno, łatwe odniesienie do danego podgatunku / zespołu. To ich własna, wypracowana jakość. Są fragmenty, brzmiące jak /Neurosis/ w swych najcięższych momentach, słychać również gitarowe łamańce w iście /Baroness/owym stylu, jednak wiele jest również w tej muzyce prostoty, mocnego, konkretnego czadu, z wyraźnymi punkowymi korzeniami.
Do tego dodajmy utwory, w których zespół miesza, zwalnia, przyspiesza, kombinuje... dla przykładu w "Said and Done", możemy wyłowić nawet elementy brutalnego niemal blackmetalowego łojenia, z kolei następny kawałek, który można śmiało nazwać /hiciorem/ płyty, "Unknown Awareness", to jeden z najbardziej melodyjnych, ale i mrocznych utworów na płycie. Mieszczący się gdzieś pomiędzy standardową /sludge/ową stylistyką, a jakąś niesprecyzowaną bliżej odmianą klimatycznego metalu (nazwijmy to pokrętnie… psychodeliczną metalową balladą:).
Zresztą, melodii na tej płycie jest więcej. Chwilami można pomyśleć, że to właśnie chwytliwe melodie, a nie ciężkie, miażdżące gitary, stanowią siłę „Static Tensions”.
Jest to album, który nie ma prawa szybko się znudzić i który na pewno otworzy grupie Kylesa drogę do popularności na skalę Mastodona, Baroness i innych największych przedstawicieli /nowej fali amerykańskiego sludge metalu/ ;)
Jednym słowem: WARTO.

Audycja poświęcona muzyce wywołującej duże kontrowersje wśród PRALKOWEJ ekipy.
Często wyśmiewamy przekombinowane płyty Dream Theater, patetyczne teksty Abraxas, niekończące się solówki Pendragon...
...dziś jednak udowodnimy, że mimo wszystko, w tym gatunku nadal można znaleźć coś, co zaciekawi słuchaczy poszukujących niebanalnych, ciekawych dźwięków.

Krótki wywiad z Mono

Podczas ostatniego koncertu japońskiej grupy Mono w poznańskiej Słodowni mieliśmy zaszczyt i przyjemność porozmawiać z mózgiem grupy - Takaakirą "Taka" Goto.
Zapraszamy do odsłuchania lub przeczytania.

Jesteście w połowie europejskiej trasy koncertowej. Jak idzie do tej pory?
- Bardzo dobrze. Myślę, że to jedna z najlepszych tras do tej pory.

To wasza druga wizyta w Poznaniu i trzecia w Polsce. Pierwszy koncert, tu w Poznaniu, był bardzo mały, kameralny, z niewielką liczbą publiczności - tym razem jest zupełnie inaczej, bilety są wyprzedane. Czy to dowód na waszą rosnącą popularność tu w Europie?
- Nie sądzę. Wszędzie przychodzi wiele osób, zwłaszcza na tej trasie
i czuję się prawdziwym szczęściarzem, jak zawsze.

A jak pamiętacie wasze pierwsze wizyty w Polsce?
- Myślę, że podczas pierwszego koncert w Polsce... był jakiś problem. Ludzie nie mogli klaskać, nie mogli stać, krzyczeć. Chyba to rząd coś zdecydował. Tak, pamiętam coś takiego, to było niezłe doświadczenie. Miejmy nadzieję, że dziś będzie lepiej, że będzie to normalny show.

Czy widzisz jakąś różnicę jeśli chodzi o publiczność europejską, w porównaniu z japońską, amerykańską?
- Raczej nie, ludzie wszędzie bardzo się wczuwają, są pełni szacunku. Tak naprawdę publiczność na całym świecie jest taka sama. Wszyscy są cudowni. Nawet w stanach, w USA, ludzie zbyt wiele nie mówią podczas koncertu. Tak, jest podobnie.

Kilka dni temu byliście również w Rosji?
- Tak, graliśmy w bardzo małym pomieszczeniu, ludzie byli strasznie upakowani. W Rosji byliśmy dwa razy do tej pory, ludzie zawsze bardzo krzyczeli, a my byliśmy podekscytowani.

A co z rosyjskimi dziennikarzami? Czytaliśmy wywiad z Tobą, zrobiony podczas trasy w Rosji i była to dosyć dziwna rozmowa.
- Tak, ostatnim razem, gdy byliśmy w Moskwie, w Rosji, ciężko było nawiązać rozmowę, nie wiem dlaczego, ale to chyba zależy od ludzi, wszędzie. Ja bardzo kocham Moskwę i rosyjska publiczność jest pełna szacunku.

A jak byś opisał waszą muzykę? To połączenie tak wielu różnych gatunków, to nie tylko rock. I czy lubicie, gdy ludzie nazywają waszą muzykę post-rockiem?
- O tak, przyzwyczajamy się do tego. Tak wielu ludzi mówi o tym całym post-rocku i dlatego też czuliśmy potrzebę zmiany czegoś, zmiany atmosfery. Musieliśmy znaleźć najlepszą drogę, naszą własną drogę. Tak naprawdę bardzo lubimy muzykę klasyczną, muzykę filmową. To jak tworzenie dźwięków do filmów. I zawsze próbujemy znaleźć jakąś nową drogę i mam nadzieję, że tak jest.

Słyszeliśmy, że zagracie w Nowym Yorku razem z orkiestrą?
- Tak, za miesiąc gramy dwa koncerty w Nowym Yorku, to będzie specjalny show z okazji 10 rocznicy. Zagramy z 25-osobową orkiestrą. To niesamowite, to będzie niesamowite.

Czy możesz powiedzieć nam, w kilku słowach, jaki Twoim zdaniem był główny zamysł nowego albumu?
- Na początku myślałem, że chcę napisać utwory takie jak 9 Symfonia Beethovena. Chcieliśmy użyć dużej orkiestry. Chcieliśmy, aby było to bardziej emocjonalne, epickie, filmowe. Tak, myślałem że będzie wspaniale, jeśli połączymy prawie klasyczne, duchowe rzeczy z 4-osobową rockową kapelą. Tak, mówienie o tym jest proste, ale robienie jest strasznie trudne.

Powiedz proszę coś więcej o klipie Follow the Map, gdyż jest znakomity.
- O tak, mieliśmy wiele szczęścia. Tak naprawdę chcieliśmy zrobić klip, ale nie mogliśmy znaleźć reżysera. Właściwie, po tym jak napisałem ten utwór, wyobrażałem sobie, że będzie cudownie zrobić do niego jakiś teledysk. I wtedy nagle ten francuski reżyser skontaktował się ze mną, z nami, i byłem tak zaskoczony. Potraktowałem to jako dar, rozpoczęliśmy rozmowę i to po prostu zadziałało.

W najbliższej przyszłości, po trasie, gdy już odpoczniecie - czy planujecie rozpocząć pracę nad kolejną płytą, może pojawią się jakieś nowe projekty, jak ten z World's End Girlfriend?
- Nie sądzę. Tak naprawdę wrócimy na europejską trasę, by zagrać na festiwalach, a później prawdopodobnie zaczniemy trasę w Stanach, w Malezji, w Azji, w Australii. Będziemy kontynuować trasę. Myślę, że potrwa to około dwóch lat od teraz i wtedy może zaczniemy coś nowego. Może.

Będziecie czekać na nowe pomysły podczas trasy?
- Taaak. Wiesz, totalnie nie mam w tej chwili pojęcia.
Mamy też nadzieję, ze znowu odwiedzicie Polskę.
- Tak, zdecydowanie, będziemy odwiedzać was zawsze :)

Kolejne mini-wydawnictwo Justina K. Broadricka mogące wywołać mieszane uczucia. Nie tylko dlatego, iż zamiast oczekiwanej od dawna premierowej pełnometrażowej płyty, otrzymujemy kolejną w kolekcji płyt Jesu EPkę. W końcu te małe dzieła Justina mają swój urok, a wydane w 2006 roku Silver, przez niektórych fanów uznawane jest za płytę wyjątkową i przełomową.

Na Why Are We Not Perfect? składają się trzy nowe kompozycje (swoją drogą znane ze splita wydanego wspólnie z Eluvium… nie będziemy jednak czepiać się Broadricka za wypuszczanie tego samego materiału na dwóch różnych wydawnictwach). Rozpoczynający płytę Farewell to rozwinięcie koncepcji muzycznej z płyty Conqueror, równie klimatyczne i nieco bardziej wygładzone. Blind And Faithless, to krótki, acz ciekawy gitarowo/elektroniczny przerywnik, których w przyszłości grupy Jesu chciałoby się słyszeć więcej. Najważniejszy punkt płyty to utwór tytułowy, a w nim, obecność gitar ograniczona do minimum. Na pierwszym planie - typowe dla Broadricka, znane zwłaszcza z jego pobocznych projektów, delikatne i powolne elektroniczne beaty o brzmieniu tak specyficznym, że nie mozna pomylić ich z czymkolwiek innym, podane w znanym już shoegazeowym klimacie. To jeszcze jedna kompozycja, w której zdecydowanie słychać geniusz Broadricka jako producenta. Dodatkowo otrzymujemy również udziwnione, wręcz narkotyczne wersje dwóch najważniejszych utworów z płyty. Przetworzone tak bardzo, iż możemy traktować je w pewnym sensie jak całkiem nowe utwory.

Nie jest to płyta, która poraża i na pewno nie jest to album, który bez wahania polecić można słuchaczom rozpoczynającym dopiero swoją przygodę z Jesu. To płyta dla tych, którzy po wydaniu Silver i Conquerora nadal czują niedosyt związany z nową muzyką Justina, w pełni akceptują jego eksperymenty i całkowite odejście od metalowej muzyki. Jeśli w tym kierunku podąży Jesu, przysporzy sobie wielu wrogów. Zresztą, pewnie większość zatwardziałych Godfleshowców postawiła już na nim krzyżyk. Wierzę jednak, że część fanów podąży za nowymi pomysłami Broadricka i będą czekać z utęsknieniem na kolejny, nawet miniaturowy zestaw magicznych i pozornie mega-nudnych utworów. Trudno nie zauważyć, do której grupy zalicza się piszący te słowa...

Rewelacyjna płyta sludgeowców z Kalifornii . To już piąty duży krążek formacji 16 (nie licząc wielu singli, EPek, splitów...), pierwszy wydany pod skrzydłami kultowego Relapse Records. Działają od początku lat 90tych, nie spiesząc się z nagrywaniem kolejnych płyt (6 lat przerwy w działalności grupy od czasu wydania ostatniego albumu).
Muzyka 'Szesnastki' to połączenie ciężkich, konkretnych riffów, z punkową motoryką, miód na serce każdego maniaka sludgeowych i stonerowych brzmień, totalny mus dla miłośników Down i Crowbar.
Tematyka utworów (z tytułami takimi jak: You Let Me Down (Again), Monday Bloody Monday, So Broken Down, What Went Wrong? :), obraca się wokół smutku, złości, przygnębienia. Nie jest to jednak dół charakterystyczny dla młodocianego samobójcy - to raczej nihilistyczne wizje nienawiści i niezrozumienia dla otaczającego świata, nakreślone po kilku głębszych. Ten totalnie pesymistyczny, nie pozbawiony jednak specyficznego poczucia humoru klimat, w przypadku grupy 16, tworzy niezapomniane wrażenia. Wydając "Bridges to Burn" zespół zasłużył na to, by po 16 latach od nagrania pierwszej płyty (!!!) znaleźć się w gronie najlepszych amerykańskich sludgeowych kapel.
